How to advertise a counselling or therapy practice in the UK under ASA and BACP rules

The direct answer

In the UK, counselling and psychotherapy advertising is governed by the CAP Code, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which covers practice websites, social media, directory profiles and paid ads alike. Professional bodies add their own rules on top: BACP members must describe their membership grade exactly, and HCPC registrants must keep promotional activity accurate. In practice that means four things. Objective claims that therapy treats a condition need robust evidence under CAP rule 12.1. Claims about serious conditions such as depression, eating disorders, OCD or suicidal thoughts are acceptable only where a suitably qualified medical professional supervises the treatment. Testimonials are allowed, but you must hold documentary evidence they are genuine, have permission to use them, and keep any claim inside them to the same standard as your own copy. And membership wording such as "Registered Member MBACP (Accred)" must match your actual grade, which the ASA checks with the professional body.

Five conclusions

The argument, compressed.

  • The CAP Code applies to a therapist's own website, social posts and directory profile, so the rules reach far beyond paid ads.
  • Testimonials are permitted in the UK. You need documentary proof each one is genuine, the client's permission, and contact details on file.
  • Claims that therapy treats a named condition need robust evidence under CAP rule 12.1; subjective wording such as "helps improve mood" sits on firmer ground.
  • Depression, eating disorders, OCD and suicidal thoughts sit on the ASA's list of conditions where treatment claims depend on supervision by a suitably qualified medical professional.
  • BACP membership wording follows your grade exactly. An unproven accreditation claim cost Stockport Counselling Services an ASA ruling in March 2025.

Decision 01 / 05

Title

Use the title your registration supports. Clinical psychologist and counselling psychologist are HCPC protected titles; counsellor and psychotherapist are open titles, so the credential beside them carries the trust.

Who actually sets the rules for UK therapy advertising

The UK has no single statutory regulator for counsellors and psychotherapists, which surprises practitioners trained elsewhere. The rules come in two layers. The first is the CAP Code, written by the Committee of Advertising Practice and enforced by the ASA. It applies to every marketer, including a sole practitioner, and since 2011 it has covered marketing on a business's own website and social media as well as paid advertising.

The second layer is your professional body or regulator. BACP's Ethical Framework asks members to communicate qualifications, experience and working methods accurately and honestly (clause 45). The HCPC, which regulates practitioner psychologists, requires registrants to be honest about their experience, qualifications and skills (standard 9.2) and to take reasonable steps to keep promotional activity accurate (standard 9.3).

Titles matter here. The HCPC protects titles such as clinical psychologist, counselling psychologist and registered psychologist. Counsellor and psychotherapist are open titles anyone can use. That openness is exactly why a precise credential line beside the title does so much work on a UK practice website: it is the reader's only way to tell a trained practitioner from an untrained one.

The short version

The ASA judges what your copy claims. Your professional body judges how you describe yourself. A UK practice website answers to both at once.

What you can say about anxiety, depression and other conditions

CAP rule 12.1 requires robust evidence for objective claims that a therapy treats or cures a condition. The ASA's general therapies advice draws the practical line: subjective, experiential wording such as "aids restful sleep" or "helps improve mood" is easier to support than a factual promise of treatment.

Rule 12.2 adds a second test. Marketers must avoid discouraging essential treatment, and claims to diagnose or treat a condition depend on the advertiser being suitably qualified for that condition. The ASA's mental health advice lists depression, chronic insomnia, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and suicidal thoughts as conditions where treatment claims are acceptable only when a suitably qualified medical professional supervises the treatment.

For most practices the answer is better positioning rather than vaguer copy. Describe who you work with and what therapy with you involves, name the training behind each area of practice, and save outcome language for what your qualifications and evidence genuinely support. Specific copy about the client's situation persuades more than a list of conditions anyway.

  • Stronger ground: "Therapy for new parents finding the first year harder than expected."
  • Stronger ground: "A space to talk through stress at work, with a BACP accredited counsellor."
  • Riskier ground: "I treat depression and OCD" without the qualification and evidence behind it.
  • Riskier ground: "Skip the NHS waiting list and get better faster."

Testimonials and reviews: allowed, with paperwork

Here the UK differs sharply from Ontario, where the psychotherapy college rules testimonials out entirely. Under the CAP Code's testimonial rules (3.45 to 3.52) a UK practice may use them, provided it holds documentary evidence that each one is genuine, has the client's permission to publish it, and keeps contact details for the person who gave it.

The harder rule is that a claim inside a testimonial counts as your claim. If a client writes that therapy cured their panic attacks, publishing it is the same as making that claim yourself, so it needs the same evidence. The ASA's therapies advice accepts testimonials that describe the client's own experience and treats factual efficacy claims inside them as objective claims.

Confidentiality adds a professional layer the CAP Code leaves to you. A testimonial that could identify a client, or a request for one made while therapy is ongoing, deserves a careful look against your ethical framework before it goes on a website. Many practices find a short anonymous quote about the experience of the first session does the reassuring work with far less risk.

Membership, accreditation and the word Dr

BACP publishes exact wording for each grade. Student and individual members describe themselves as Student Member of BACP or Individual Member of BACP and use no designatory letters or logos. Registered members can use Registered Member MBACP and the member logo; accredited members use Registered Member MBACP (Accred); senior accredited members use Registered Member MBACP (Snr Accred). Since April 2022 the member logo is a collective mark, and it must appear in its original form with that statement.

The ASA enforces this. In March 2025 it ruled against Stockport Counselling Services after a website described the therapist as BACP accredited and the advertiser could provide no evidence for the claim. A stale bio line is enough to trigger a ruling, so check every directory profile as well as the website you edit most.

The title Dr carries its own risk in health advertising. ASA guidance says practitioners without a general medical qualification should avoid implying one, and the simplest route is to leave Dr off health ads or qualify it immediately, for example with the doctorate subject beside the name.

Where to start this week

Open your homepage, your about page and the two directory profiles that send the most enquiries. Highlight every claim about a named condition, every testimonial, every membership line and every use of a protected title. Each highlight needs either evidence on file or new wording.

Then write the sentence the rules leave you with and the market rewards anyway: who you work with best, what therapy with you involves, and the credential that makes it believable. Put it first on every surface. A UK client comparing ten practices on a directory reads that sentence long before any testimonial.

Before you use it

Questions that can change the recommendation.

Can therapists use testimonials in the UK?

Yes. The CAP Code allows testimonials when you hold documentary evidence that each one is genuine, have the client's permission to publish it, and keep contact details for the person who gave it. Any factual claim inside a testimonial is treated as your own claim and needs the same evidence. Check your professional body's ethical framework on confidentiality before asking a current client for one.

Can I say I treat anxiety or depression on my website?

Treatment claims need robust evidence under CAP rule 12.1 and suitable qualifications under rule 12.2. The ASA lists depression, eating disorders, OCD, schizophrenia, chronic insomnia and suicidal thoughts as conditions where treatment claims are acceptable only when a suitably qualified medical professional supervises the treatment. Describing who you work with and the experience of therapy is safer ground, and CAP's free Copy Advice service will review specific wording.

Can I call myself a psychotherapist in the UK without registration?

Psychotherapist and counsellor are open titles in the UK. Titles such as clinical psychologist and counselling psychologist are protected by the HCPC and need registration. Professional bodies such as BACP and UKCP set their own rules on how members describe themselves, so match your wording to your membership grade.

Do ASA rules apply to my own website and social media?

Yes. Since 2011 the CAP Code has covered marketing on a business's own website and social media channels, in addition to paid ads, so a practice website, Instagram account and directory profile all count as advertising.

What does brand strategy cost for a UK therapy practice?

At Branding Tatva the Foundation engagement starts at £1,950 for UK clients. Its published scope includes discovery and positioning, audience definition, a core visual identity, starter brand guidelines and launch messaging direction. A review of directory profiles or clinician bios must be agreed in the written proposal. Regulatory approval is outside the scope: the practitioner remains responsible for advertising, and the ASA or your professional body resolves uncertain interpretations.
