Positioning

Testimonials, discounts and "best": Ontario's health advertising rules compared

The direct answer

Ontario health advertising follows profession-specific rules. CRPO and RCDSO prohibit testimonials in advertising; physiotherapy guidance permits genuine, unpaid patient testimonials, with consent for identifying or health information. Result claims also differ: CRPO prohibits promises that cannot be delivered, physiotherapy prohibits unsupported or unrealistic claims and guarantees of successful outcomes, and RCDSO prohibits expectations of favourable results. Shared marketing needs review against each represented profession's rules.

Five conclusions

The argument, compressed.

  • CRPO and RCDSO prohibit testimonials in advertising. Physiotherapy guidance permits genuine, unpaid patient testimonials, with consent for names, photos or health information.
  • Result restrictions differ: CRPO prohibits promises that cannot be delivered; physiotherapy prohibits unsupported or unrealistic claims and outcome guarantees; RCDSO prohibits expectations of favourable results.
  • Unless otherwise specified, an advertised dental fee is an inclusive maximum for every patient. Dental incentives such as contests and free services are prohibited.
  • Physiotherapists may offer discounts and packages when treatment follows a proper assessment and the package terms are disclosed.
  • Review shared marketing against each represented profession's rules. A conservative house style is a planning choice, not regulatory approval.

The strictest rule check

Four steps for any clinic whose website, signage or social accounts speak for more than one regulated profession.

List

Name every regulated profession the clinic's marketing mentions or pictures, including associates and part time clinicians.

The comparison, profession by profession

The shared starting point is factual, verifiable advertising without superiority claims. The outcome rules differ, as do testimonial, offer and fee conditions; permission in one profession does not transfer to another.

  • Testimonials. CRPO and RCDSO prohibit their use in advertising. Physiotherapy permits genuine unpaid patient accounts; consent is needed for identifying or health information. Independent reviews are not automatically advertising you control.
  • Superiority claims. Banned for all three. RCDSO names "state of the art" as an example of wording that implies higher quality.
  • Results and fear. CRPO prohibits result promises that cannot be delivered and appeals to fear; physiotherapy prohibits unsupported or unrealistic claims and outcome guarantees; RCDSO prohibits favourable-result expectations and appeals to fear.
  • Discounts and free offers. Dentists: contests, giveaways, draws and free services are banned. Physiotherapists: discounts and packages are allowed after an assessment, with package terms disclosed.
  • Fees. Unless otherwise specified, a dental advertised fee is an inclusive maximum for all patients. Physiotherapy packages must disclose inclusions, individual purchase options and unused-service refunds.
  • Specialist claims. Dental ads about an area, procedure or treatment must identify general-practitioner or specialist status. Physiotherapy distinguishes a significant practice focus from an authorised specialist claim. CRPO requires appropriate titles and verifiable practice-area training.

What this means for a clinic's brand

Every one of these rules pushes in the same direction: away from borrowed credibility and toward evidence a patient can check. That is good news for positioning, because the clinics that win under these standards are the ones that can describe precisely whom they treat and how.

For shared pages, a conservative house style can reduce conflicts: omit testimonials where psychotherapy or dentistry is advertised, explain services with factual details and assign a reviewer. Each registrant still needs to check their own requirements, including restrictions on credentials, titles, offers and third-party advertising. A branding review is not legal clearance or college approval.

Each college's guide on this site goes deeper: the CRPO guide for psychotherapy practices, the RCDSO guide for dental clinics and the physiotherapy guide for rehab clinics.

The rule of thumb

Review shared material against every profession it describes; a house style does not replace registrant-specific checks.

Before you use it

Questions that can change the recommendation.

Can healthcare clinics in Ontario use patient testimonials?

CRPO and RCDSO prohibit testimonials in advertising. Physiotherapy guidance permits genuine unpaid patient accounts, with consent for identifying or health information. Shared clinic advertising needs profession-specific review; independent third-party reviews are a separate situation.

Can an Ontario clinic call itself the best in the city?

No regulated health profession covered here may do so. CRPO, RCDSO and the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario all ban claims of superiority over other providers.

Which rule applies in a clinic with dentists, physiotherapists and psychotherapists?

Each clinician remains responsible under their own college's requirements. Check shared advertising against every represented profession; a conservative house style can help, but does not establish compliance by itself.
